Most people know him by his pen name, Dr. Seuss. He wrote and drew more than 60 books for children. These stories have been sold over 600 million times. His books are also translated into more than 20 different languages. People all over the world love his imaginative tales. His work has even become movies and TV shows.

Geisel started his career by drawing for magazines and ads. He drew cartoons for publications like Vanity Fair and Life. He also made famous ads for a bug spray called Flit. One catchy phrase he created was "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" This advertising work helped him earn a lot of money. It allowed him and his wife, Helen, to travel to 30 countries. He felt that seeing new places helped his creative mind.

His journey into children's books began with a struggle. In 1936, he was on a ship returning from Europe. The rhythm of the ship's engines inspired his first book. It was called And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. He published this book in 1937. Before it was published, many companies rejected his work. He actually almost burned the manuscript before a friend helped him.

During World War II, Geisel did very different work. He drew over 400 political cartoons for a newspaper called PM. These drawings spoke about the war and important leaders. He also joined the United States Army as a captain. He led an animation department to make films for soldiers. One of these films was part of the Private Snafu series. He even won the Legion of Merit for his service.

After the war, he wrote his most beloved stories. He created classics like The Cat in the Hat in 1957. He also wrote How the Grinch Stole Christmas! in that same year. His books like Green Eggs and Ham are still very popular. He even won a special Pulitzer Prize in 1984. Every year on March 2, people celebrate National Read Across America Day. This day honors his birthday and the joy of reading.
