The Where's Wally? book series makes this possible through fun puzzles. These books feature huge, detailed drawings called double-page spreads. Each page shows hundreds of people doing funny things in busy places. Your main goal is to find a character named Wally. He is easy to recognize by his red-and-white-striped shirt, bobble hat, and glasses. However, the artist often uses red-and-white stripes on other objects to trick you. This makes the search a wonderful and tricky challenge for readers.

Finding Wally is a step-by-step game of observation. You must scan through massive crowds to spot his small shape. The artist, Martin Handford, actually makes the game harder as time goes on. In the very first book, Wally was quite large on the page. In later books, Handford made him much smaller. He also added many more people to the scenes. The first book had about 225 people on a page. By the last book, there were about 850 people to look through!

This famous series began in the United Kingdom. An art director named David Bennett asked Martin Handford to make a book of crowd scenes in 1986. Handford was a graduate of the University for the Creative Arts in Kent. While preparing for a book fair, someone suggested hiding a special character in the crowds. Handford created Wally as a traveler who moves through different worlds and times. The first book was officially published on 25 June 1987. Since then, the books have become a huge global success. By 2007, more than 73 million books had been sold around the world.

Because these books are so popular, they have many different names and characters.

In North America, the books are called Where's Waldo? This is because an executive did not like the name Wally. In other places, Wally has even more names, like Walter in Germany or Charlie in France. You can also search for Wally's friends, such as Wenda or his dog, Woof. There is even a villain named Odlaw, who wears yellow and black stripes. You might even find Wizard Whitebeard, a character with a very long beard.

Today, the world of Wally is much bigger than just paper books. The series has inspired television shows, comic strips, and even video games. You can even see Wally's face on a Virgin Atlantic airplane!

There are even fan clubs called the Wally Watchers. These fans dress up in red and white stripes just like him. Whether you are looking through a book or playing a game, the hunt for Wally is a classic way to have fun.
