The *Where's Wally?* series is a famous collection of children's puzzle books.

These books feature incredibly detailed double-page spread illustrations. Each illustration depicts hundreds of people participating in many amusing activities at a specific location. The primary challenge for the reader is to locate a character named Wally. Wally is easily identified by his signature red-and-white-striped shirt, bobble hat, and glasses. The books are more than just simple drawings; they are complex visual puzzles. They have become a global phenomenon that invites readers to practice intense observation.

Finding Wally involves a specific visual mechanism of scanning and pattern recognition. Readers must navigate through massive, crowded scenes to find a single, small figure. The illustrator, Martin Handford, intentionally increased the difficulty of these puzzles over time. In the first book, Wally was relatively large on the page. As the series progressed, Handford reduced his physical size significantly. He also increased the number of surrounding characters to create more visual noise. The first book's first page contained about 225 characters. By the last book, that number grew to approximately 850 characters.

To make the search even harder, the books often use red herrings. These are deceptive objects that use red-and-white stripes to trick the reader's eyes.

The series includes several distinct types of publications and editions. There are seven primary books, such as *Where's Wally? The Fantastic Journey*. These books often include checklists for finding specific items or people. Some editions are also released in a tiny A6 "pocket" format. These small books make Wally even harder to spot. There are also special versions like the *Ultimate Fun Book*. This was an activity book featuring stickers, games, and cardboard punch-outs. Additionally, the *Magnificent Poster Book* offered large-format posters of the detailed scenes.

The history of the series began in 1986 in the United Kingdom. Martin Handford, a graduate of the University for the Creative Arts in Kent, was commissioned for the project. Art director David Bennett of Walker Books asked Handford to create detailed crowd scenes. Bennett was inspired by the *Busy Places* series by Philippe Dupasquier. During preparations for the Bologna Children's Book Fair, a suggestion was made to hide a character. Handford conceived of Wally as a world and time traveler. The first book was published on 25 June 1987.

The series has achieved massive international significance. By 2007, more than 73 million books had been sold worldwide. The books have been translated into 26 different languages. They are published in over 50 countries. Because of this popularity, the character's name changes based on the region. In North America, the series is titled *Where's Waldo?*. This change occurred because a publisher disliked the name Wally. In Germany, he is known as Walter, while in France, he is called Charlie. In Italy, his name is Ubaldo, and in Vietnam, he is Van Lang.

Many notable characters inhabit the world of Wally. Wally has a girlfriend named Wilma, who was later replaced by her twin sister, Wenda. There is also an arch-enemy named Odlaw. Odlaw wears yellow and black stripes and has a moustache. His name is a reversal of the American name "Waldo." Other characters include Wizard Whitebeard, who is known for his exceptionally long beard. Even a dog named Woof appears in the series.

There are even devoted fan clubs called the Wally Watchers. These fans dress in red-and-white stripes and follow Wally wherever he goes.

The *Where's Wally?* franchise has expanded into many different media systems. It has inspired two television programs, including a 1991 animated series. There is also a comic strip and several video games. The brand's reach is so wide that Wally's image has appeared on a Virgin Atlantic airliner.

The ownership of the franchise has also moved through various companies. Entertainment Rights purchased the franchise in 2007. Later, Boomerang Media acquired the subsidiaries. Eventually, DreamWorks Animation acquired Classic Media in 2012. Finally, NBCUniversal gained the rights when it acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016. This shows how a simple puzzle book can grow into a massive global brand.
