Roger Hargreaves was a famous English writer and artist. He made books just for young readers to enjoy. He is best known for his colorful Mr. Men and Little Miss books. These stories are very funny and use bright, bold colors. People all over the world love his work. More than 85 million copies have been sold so far. His stories are even translated into 20 different languages.

His creative process often started with simple ideas. One famous character came from his son, Adam. When Adam was eight, he asked what a tickle looked like. Roger drew a round orange man with very long arms. This character became Mr. Tickle. This was the very first Mr. Men book. It was published in 1971 and became an instant hit.

Roger had an interesting path to becoming an author. He grew up in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, England. He worked in his father's laundry and dry-cleaning business first. Later, he worked in advertising for many years. He was even a creative director at a London firm. In 1971, he wrote the first Mr. Men book while working there. By 1976, he could finally quit his day job to write.

His characters became much more than just books. In 1974, the BBC made an animated TV series. Later, he launched the Little Miss series in 1981. That series also became a popular television show. Roger wrote many other series too, like Timbuctoo and John Mouse. He created 46 Mr. Men books and 33 Little Miss books. These characters have lived on for many years.

Today, his legacy continues through his family and others. His son, Adam, now writes new stories for the characters. Adam even uses his father's signature on the book covers. In 2011, Google honored him with special art on their homepage. This was to celebrate what would have been his 76th birthday. His work remains a bright part of childhood for many people.
