His father was a well-known poet named Ai Qing. Because of his father, Ai's family was sent to live in labor camps and far places. They lived in a place called Xinjiang for 16 years. In 1976, his family finally returned to Beijing. He later studied animation at the Beijing Film Academy in 1978. He also helped start an art group called the Stars with other artists.

In 1981, Ai moved to the United States to study.

He lived in Philadelphia and San Francisco before moving to New York City. He studied English at the University of Pennsylvania and the Berkeley Adult School. While in New York, he became friends with the poet Allen Ginsberg. Ai also spent time studying art at the Art Students League of New York. He eventually returned to China in 1993 to help his father. This move helped him start new art projects in Beijing.

Ai Weiwei uses his voice to help people during hard times.

After a huge earthquake hit Sichuan in 2008, he led a special investigation. He and his team looked for the names of students who died. By April 2009, they had found 5,385 names of children. He also uses the internet to share his ideas with everyone. He has used blogs and social media to talk about freedom for many years. Even when he faced many hard jobs, he kept working for others.
