He became well known while studying at Peking University in China. During his time there, he organized groups called "Democracy Salons." In 1989, he became a leader for students protesting in Tiananmen Square. This was a very important moment in Chinese history. Because of his role, he was placed on a list of most wanted student leaders. This list included 21 people who had helped lead the movement.

His life changed quickly after the 1989 protests. He went into hiding but was arrested on July 2, 1989. In 1991, he was sentenced to four years in prison. He spent much of this time at Qincheng Prison. This prison is known for holding many political prisoners. Because his case was so famous, he was given his own cell. He was released on parole in 1993. Some believe this happened because China wanted to host the Olympic Games.

After his release, Wang Dan continued to work for democracy. He was arrested a second time in May 1995. The government charged him with plotting to overthrow the state. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 1996. However, he did not serve the whole time. In 1998, he was released and sent to live in the United States. This move happened because of an agreement between the U.S. and China. The U.S. agreed to stop a certain criticism of China at the United Nations.

In the United States, Wang Dan focused on his education. He went to Harvard University to study. He earned a master's degree in 2001 and a PhD in 2008. He also did research at Oxford University in 2009. Wang Dan has written several important works. One is called "20 years after Tiananmen." Another is "Rebuild China with an Olympic Amnesty." He has also served as the chairman of the Chinese Constitutional Reform Association.

Later in his life, Wang Dan faced very difficult accusations. In 2023, a man named Lee Yuan-chun accused him of sexual misconduct in New York. Lee filed a criminal complaint against him. A prosecutor in Taiwan looked at the case. The prosecutor decided not to prosecute because they did not have jurisdiction over crimes committed abroad.
