Chai Ling is a Chinese-American psychologist and a former student leader. She is well known for her role in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing. These protests were large demonstrations led by students who wanted changes in their country.

Today, she is also a business leader and an activist. She works to protect human rights in China. Her life has moved from being a student in China to a professional in the United States.

During the protests, Chai Ling became a very influential person. She first joined the movement by working as a secretary for a university committee.

She became a leader when she joined a hunger strike. A hunger strike is when people stop eating to show they are serious about their goals. On May 12, 1989, a student named Wang Dan told her he would join the strike. Chai gave a speech that evening to many people. This speech helped her gain a lot of support from other students. By May 15, she was elected as a commander for the Hunger Strike Committee.

Life in the square was very difficult and full of conflict. Chai Ling had many disagreements with other student groups and intellectuals.

She even had different views than her husband, Feng Congde, about when to leave the square. On May 21, many leaders went into hiding because of rumors about government troops. Chai later became the leader of a group called the Defend Tiananmen Square Headquarters. There were many hard choices to make about whether to stay or go. On the night of June 3, a violent crackdown occurred. Chai and Feng escaped by train and spent ten months in hiding.

Chai Ling's journey to safety involved many different people and places.

After the crackdown, she was helped by a network of people to reach Hong Kong. From there, she was moved to France. Eventually, she moved to the United States to continue her education. She studied politics at Princeton University and later earned a degree from Harvard. In 1998, she started a software company called Jenzabar. She also founded a nonprofit group named All Girls Allowed to help end China's one-child policy.

Chai Ling's story connects to many ideas about leadership and change. She has used her experiences to speak to the United States Congress many times.

Her work shows how one person can become a voice for many others. She has written a book about her journey called "A Heart for Freedom." Her life shows how people move from being students to being leaders in many different fields. Even though her path was not easy, she continues to work on important issues today.
