Mei-ling grew up in a home called Neishidi in Shanghai. She became a famous leader who helped connect China with the rest of the world.

Mei-ling spent much of her youth learning in the United States. She attended school in New Jersey and Georgia as a young girl. At age 15, she started at Wesleyan College in Georgia. Later, she moved to Wellesley College to be near her brother. She graduated from Wellesley in 1917 with a major in English literature.

Because of her studies, she spoke English with a southern accent. This skill helped her talk to many people in America later on.

In 1927, Mei-ling married a man named Chiang Kai-shek.

He was a very powerful leader of the Kuomintang party. They were married in Shanghai on December 1, 1927. They did not have any children together during their 48-year marriage. Mei-ling was not just a wife; she was a busy worker. She served as a translator, secretary, and advisor for her husband. She also held roles in the Chinese government and aeronautical commissions.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Mei-ling did a lot of hard work. She started a project to help children who lost their parents. She built two large schools in Nanjing for these children.

She called these children her "warphans" and cared for them deeply. She also traveled to the United States to ask for help. In 1943, she spoke to both houses of the U.S. Congress. This made her the first Chinese national to do such a thing.

Some people in history have different views of Mei-ling's life. Critics said her family, known as the "Four Families," took too much money. They said the family lived a very rich and luxurious life. However, her niece said Mei-ling gave most of her wealth away.
