She changed how women dressed by making style feel sporty and casual. Before her, women's fashion was often very stiff and formal. Chanel introduced a new standard of chic style after World War I. She was so important that Time magazine listed her as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Her work went far beyond just clothing. She also created famous jewelry, handbags, and perfumes.

Her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, is still very well known today.

Chanel's way of making clothes used very interesting ideas. She often used simple fabrics like jersey and tricot. At that time, these materials were mostly used for men's underwear.

This monogram has been used by her brand since the 1920s. She even designed dance costumes for the Ballets Russes. This shows how she could apply her skills to many different types of art.

Her life began in a very different way than her famous years. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born in 1883 in Saumur, France. Her mother, Jeanne, worked as a laundrywoman. Her father, Albert, was a traveling street vendor. When Gabrielle was 11, her mother passed away. The children were sent to live at an orphanage called Aubazine. This was a place for children who were poor or abandoned.

Life there was very strict and frugal. However, it was at this orphanage where she learned how to sew.

Chanel's career grew through many different jobs and places. She first worked as a seamstress and a singer in cafes. She used the nickname "Coco" during her time as an entertainer. In 1910, she became a licensed milliner, which is a person who makes hats.

She opened her first shop, Chanel Modes, at 21 rue Cambon in Paris. Later, she opened boutiques in seaside towns like Deauville and Biarritz. In 1919, she officially became a couturière, or a high-fashion designer. By 1927, she owned five different buildings on the rue Cambon.

Her life also included very difficult and serious moments. During World War II, her fashion house closed in 1939. She stayed in France while the Nazi German military occupied the country. Documents later showed she worked with the Nazi intelligence service. She also had a relationship with a German diplomat named Hans Günther von Dincklage. After the war ended, she was questioned about these actions. A friend, British prime minister Winston Churchill, helped her avoid being charged. She eventually moved to Switzerland before returning to Paris in 1954 to restart her business.
