Liliane Bettencourt was one of the most famous and wealthy women in France.

She was born in Paris on 21 October 1922. Her father, Eugène Schueller, founded L'Oréal, which is one of the largest beauty companies in the world. Liliane was an heiress, which means she inherited great wealth from her family. By the time she died, she was the richest woman in France. She was also the 14th richest person on the entire planet.

Liliane learned about the family business by working very hard as a young girl. At age 15, she became an apprentice at L'Oréal. She spent her days mixing cosmetics and putting labels on shampoo bottles.

In 1957, she became the principal shareholder after her father passed away. She eventually held 30.5% of the company's shares. In 1974, she made a big move to protect her wealth. She traded half of her stake for a 3% stake in Nestlé S.A. This helped her manage her many assets safely.

Her life was filled with many important people and events. She married André Bettencourt in 1950, a man who served as a French cabinet minister. They had one daughter named Françoise, who was born in 1953. Liliane also built a large art collection. It included famous works by artists like Picasso and Matisse.

In 1987, she helped start the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation. This group uses its money to support medical and cultural projects. About 55% of the foundation's funds go toward scientific research and education.

Later in her life, Liliane faced many difficult legal challenges. A man named François-Marie Banier became a close friend and received many expensive gifts. These gifts included art and life insurance policies worth hundreds of millions of euros.

Because of this, her daughter filed a legal complaint in 2007. She worried that Liliane was being taken advantage of. This led to a long investigation by the French police. A butler even made secret tapes of conversations to help the investigation. These tapes were used to see if Liliane was being treated fairly.

Because of her health, a judge made a big decision in 2011. The court placed Liliane under guardianship. This means her daughter and grandsons were given the power to manage her money and health.

This was done to protect her as her mental health declined. Liliane lived through many changes in the world and in her own family. She passed away on 21 September 2017. Her funeral was held at the Église Saint-Pierre in Neuilly-sur-Seine. She left behind a massive legacy in both business and charity.
