François Coty was a famous French businessman and perfumer. Many people call him the founding father of the modern perfume industry.

He was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, on May 3, 1874. His parents were descendants of people who helped start Ajaccio. After his parents died, he was raised by his great-grandmother and grandmother. Later, he moved to Paris and changed his name to Coty. He learned the art of making scents from a pharmacist named Raymond Goery.

Coty's career took off because of a lucky accident. In 1904, he began selling his fragrance, La Rose Jacqueminot. One day, a bottle of this perfume broke on a shop counter. The wonderful smell attracted so many customers that his entire stock sold out in minutes.

To make his products even better, Coty worked with a designer named René Lalique. They created beautiful glass bottles in the Art Nouveau style. These bottles often featured flowers or female figures. Coty also invented fragrance sets, which were gift boxes with matching soaps and creams.

Before Coty, perfume was a luxury for only the very rich. He changed this by making scents available to a mass market. He offered different price points so more people could buy them. He combined natural essences with synthetic products to keep costs low.

He built a huge factory complex called "La cité des Parfums" near Paris. This site had 9,000 employees and made 100,000 bottles every day. By the start of World War I, his perfumes were number one in the world.

Coty's business grew to include many different countries. He had branches in Moscow, London, New York, and Buenos Aires. In 1921, he created an American company to help sell products in the United States. This helped him avoid high taxes on luxury goods. By 1925, about 36 million women around the world used his face powders. His most popular powder was called Air-spun, which launched in 1934. Even though he was very successful, his fortune shrank later due to a divorce and an economic crisis.

Coty was also very active in politics and the arts. He owned the famous newspaper Le Figaro and even served as a senator.

Because he was very wealthy, he acted as a patron, which means he gave money to support important work. He helped scientists, artists, and even early pilots trying to fly across the Atlantic. He also supported sports like the 1928 Summer Olympics. His life shows how one person's ideas can change how the whole world uses products.
