Mary Kay Ash was a very successful American businesswoman. She wanted to help other women find success in their own careers.

In 1963, she started a company called Mary Kay Cosmetics. She used a $5,000 investment from her oldest son, Ben Rogers, Jr. to begin. The company started in a small storefront in Dallas, Texas. At first, it only had nine saleswomen working there. This small start grew into a huge global business.

Her company worked using a specific way to sell beauty products.

This was called a house party model. A saleswoman would invite her friends to her home. These friends could try out facials for free. Then, the saleswoman would show them the products to buy. This method allowed her to talk to many customers at once. It also helped the saleswomen make more profit on each item.

Mary Kay Ash grew up in Texas. She was born Mary Kathlyn Wagner on May 12, 1918. Her mother was a nurse and a restaurant manager.

Mary Kay attended school in Houston and graduated in 1934. She married Ben Rogers and had three children. While her husband was away for World War II, she sold books door-to-door. Later, she married George Hallenbeck, who helped her plan the business.

By the time she died, her business was very large.

The company had more than 800,000 representatives. These workers were located in at least 37 different countries. This included places in Asia, Europe, and South America. The company had more than $1.2 billion in sales. Mary Kay Ash herself had a fortune of $98 million. She received many honors, like the Horatio Alger Award.

Mary Kay Ash used her success to help others. In 1996, she started the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. This group raises money to fight cancer. It also helps women who face domestic violence.

She wrote several books about her life and business. One was an autobiography published in 1994. She died on November 22, 2001. She is buried in a cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Her life shows how a small idea can grow very big.
