Dorian Leigh was a famous American model from the mid-1900s. She is often called one of the first supermodels in history. This means she was a major star in the fashion world. She was very well known in both the United States and Europe.

People loved her because she had a very unique look. She was famous for her bright blue eyes and her zig-zagged eyebrows. Fashion editors even told her never to change those eyebrows.

Before she became a model, Dorian had many different jobs. She was very good at math and drawing. She even worked as a tool designer for Eastern Air Lines. During World War II, she helped design wings for airplanes. She earned 65 cents an hour at first. Later, she earned 1 dollar an hour. She also worked as an apprentice copywriter for Republic Pictures. This job involved writing words for movie advertisements.

Her modeling career began in 1944 when she was 27 years old. She went to the Harry Conover modeling agency. At the time, she was shorter than many other models. She stood about 5 feet 5 inches tall. Her first big job was the June 1944 cover of Harper's Bazaar. She appeared on many famous magazine covers later on. These included Vogue, LIFE, Paris Match, and Elle. She even appeared on six American Vogue covers in 1946.

Dorian was a huge success working for the makeup company Revlon. In 1952, she was in a famous ad called "Fire and Ice." In this ad, she wore a silver sequined gown. It also had a huge red wrap. The dress was so hard to make that only the front was finished. The back was held together with safety pins. This ad won an award for being the best magazine ad of the year.

Dorian also helped change how models get paid. She started her own agency called the Fashion Bureau. She created a "voucher system" for her models. This system meant models got paid every week. Before this, models often had to wait a long time for money. Her ideas even inspired Eileen Ford to start Ford Models. Dorian's sister, Suzy Parker, also became a very famous model and actress.
