Gia Carangi was a famous American model from Philadelphia. Many people believe she was the very first supermodel. She became a star very quickly in the late 1970s. This fast rise was called a "meteoric" career by the magazine Vogue. She appeared on many famous magazine covers. These included issues of Vogue, Vogue Paris, and Cosmopolitan. She also worked for big fashion brands like Armani, Dior, and Versace.

Being a top model was a very big job. Gia worked with many famous photographers. These included Richard Avedon and Francesco Scavullo. She even appeared in a music video for the band Blondie. At the height of her fame, she earned half a million dollars in one year. People in the fashion world often called her simply "Gia." She was known for her unique look.

Life was not always easy for Gia. She faced many hard struggles with drug addiction. This began after her friend and agent, Wilhelmina Cooper, died in 1980. Her addiction made it very hard to work. She sometimes missed shoots or fell asleep during them. Her career began to decline quickly after this. She tried to get help by moving back to Philadelphia. She even went to a detox program to try to stay sober.

In 1986, Gia died at the age of 26. She died from complications related to AIDS. She was one of the first well-known women to die from this virus. Her life was very sad at the end. She worked simple jobs like a checkout clerk and a cafeteria worker. Even though she struggled, people still remember her impact on fashion. Some say her look helped start a style called "heroin chic."

Many people have told Gia's story since she passed away. In 1998, an HBO movie called Gia was made about her life. The actress Angelina Jolie played the role of Gia. Jolie won several awards for her performance in the film. There is also a book about her called "Thing of Beauty." Gia is also honored on the AIDS Memorial Quilt. She is remembered on three different blocks of this huge quilt.
