She was the editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia for a long time. She held this important role from 1988 until 2016. Sozzani was known for her unique way of looking at fashion. She did not just show pretty clothes in her magazine. She used her work to talk about real world issues. This included things like domestic violence and the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Her magazine was a place for big ideas and deep thought.

She worked in many different ways to make her vision real. Sozzani often gave photographers a lot of freedom. She worked closely with people like Steven Meisel to create the supermodel phenomenon. She also supported photographers such as Peter Lindbergh and Paolo Roversi. These artists could choose their own subjects and experiment with their art. This helped her magazine stand out from others. She even launched Vogue Curvy to help plus-size women find fashion tips.

Sozzani had a very interesting life story. She was born in Mantua, which is in northern Italy. Her family had a long history of aristocrats. She studied philosophy and languages at a university in Milan. She graduated in 1973. Her career in magazines started in 1976 at Vogue Bambini. This was a magazine for children. Later, she led other magazines like Lei and Per Lui. In 1994, she became the editor-in-chief of Condé Nast Italia.

She also did many things outside of her main magazine. Sozzani wrote many books about art and photography. One book was called "British Artists at Work." She also published "I capricci della moda" in 2010. These books used her writing to explore different styles.

She also helped organize art shows and exhibitions. Some of these shows focused on the history of Italian Vogue. Others looked at the work of famous photographers. She was a very busy and creative person.

Sozzani used her fame to help people in need. She was a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. In 2014, she worked for the World Food Programme to fight hunger. She also helped start a group called Child Priority. This group helps talented children find ways to study and work.

She won the Swarovski Fashion Award for Positive Change in 2016. Sadly, she died from lung cancer on December 22, 2016. A memorial service was held for her in Milan in 2017.
