Through his work, he acts as a political commentator and an architect of Chinese modernism. His creative practice includes political sculptures, photography, and large-scale public works. His artistic process often involves deep investigation and the use of various tools. As a documentarian, he uses cameras to capture real-life surroundings, as seen in his New York Photographs. He also engages in conceptual art by altering readymade objects to change their meaning. In architecture, he designs structures like his first studio house in Caochangdi. He even founded FAKE Design, an architecture studio, in 2003. His work can range from small photographic details to massive installations like the "Sunflower Seeds" project. Each method allows him to examine the line between public life and private art.

Ai Weiwei's work can be categorized into several distinct types. He creates large-scale sculptures, such as the "Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads," which features animal heads from the Chinese zodiac. He also produces photographic collections and digital works. His digital presence has become a form of performance art. For example, his use of blogs and social media allowed him to share scathing social commentary. In 2023, he even created a mobile app. This app allows users to place an image of his middle finger over any location on Google Earth they disapprove of.

His life was shaped by significant historical and personal events in China. His father was the famous poet Ai Qing, who was denounced during the Anti-Rightist Movement. Because of this, Ai's family was sent to a labor camp in Beidahuang in 1958. They lived in exile in Shihezi, Xinjiang, for 16 years before returning to Beijing in 1976. In 1978, Ai studied animation at the Beijing Film Academy. He also helped found the "Stars," an early avant-garde art group. This group included artists like Ma Desheng and Wang Keping.

From 1981 to 1993, Ai lived in the United States, which influenced his global perspective. He was one of 161 students to take the TOEFL exam in 1981 to study abroad. He lived in Philadelphia and San Francisco before moving to New York City. In New York, he studied at the Art Students League and befriended the beat poet Allen Ginsberg. During his time in the East Village, he documented his life through photography. He also became a highly skilled professional blackjack player in Atlantic City casinos. He returned to China in 1993 to care for his ill father.

Ai's activism has led to significant confrontations with the Chinese government. Following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, he led a "Citizens' Investigation." This project aimed to find the names of students who died in schools with poor construction. By April 2009, his team had collected 5,385 names of deceased children. This work resulted in him being beaten by police in Chengdu. In 2011, he was arrested at Beijing Capital International Airport. He was detained for 81 days on charges of economic crimes. After his passport was returned in 2015, he moved to Europe.

His career connects art to global political systems and human rights movements. He has lived in Berlin, the United Kingdom, and Portugal while maintaining an international presence. He sits on the Board of Advisors for the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong. His work demonstrates how an individual can use creativity to demand accountability. By combining architecture, digital media, and traditional sculpture, he remains a central figure in global cultural development. His life shows the connection between personal history and the struggle for social change.
