Andreas Gursky

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Andreas Gursky is a famous artist from Germany. He is known for making very large color photos.

His pictures show many things from our world. He takes photos of big crowds and tall buildings. He also captures stores and wide rivers.

He often takes pictures from high up. This lets him see things we cannot normally reach. Gursky uses computers to edit his work. He uses them to make his images look very detailed. This can make a photo look like a field of color. For example, his photo of a store shows many rows of items.

These items look like colorful patterns.

His art is very valuable. One photo of a river is named Rhein II. In 2011, it sold for over four million dollars. It is the most expensive photo by a living photographer. Gursky comes from a family of photographers. His father and grandfather both took pictures too. He studied art at a school in Düsseldorf. He even helped start a big institute for photography there.
