Many people call him the most important realist author of the 1800s. Realism is a way of writing that shows life as it truly is. Fontane was very careful to include correct details in his stories. He did not tell readers what his characters were thinking. Instead, he showed their motives through their words and their actions. This made his stories feel very honest and real to his readers.
