He was a German historian, a lawyer, and a politician. He spent his life studying the ancient Roman world. Mommsen did not just read books about the past. He looked at real objects to find the truth. He was a pioneer in a field called epigraphy. This is the study of ancient writing carved into stone or metal. By studying these inscriptions, he helped create a new way to learn history. His work was so important that he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902.

Mommsen used a very careful method to study history. He believed in a process called autopsy. This means looking at the original object itself instead of just reading a copy. He traveled to places like France and Italy to see Roman carvings in person. He wanted to check every detail of every inscription. He helped organize a huge project called the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. This was a massive collection of all known Latin inscriptions. It eventually grew to seventeen volumes. Mommsen worked on five of these volumes himself.
