Johann Gustav Droysen was a famous German historian. He was born on July 6, 1808, in Treptow. This place is now called Trzebiatów in Poland. His father, Johann Christoph Droysen, was an army chaplain. As a young boy, Johann saw military actions during the War of Liberation. These early sights made him feel a strong bond to the Kingdom of Prussia. He grew up to be a man who studied the past very deeply.

Droysen spent many years studying and teaching. He went to the gymnasium of Stettin and the University of Berlin. From 1827 to 1829, he was a tutor for Felix Mendelssohn. He later taught at the University of Berlin starting in 1833. He even taught without a salary for a few years. He studied ancient history and translated works by Greek writers. One of his most famous books was about Alexander the Great. This book was published in Berlin in 1833.

His writing changed how people thought about history. He created a new way to look at the power of leaders. He even made up a new word for history. He called the time after Alexander's conquests the "Hellenistic" period. He wrote about this in books between 1836 and 1843. Droysen believed history was a way to understand how big forces work. He wrote many other books to explain these ideas. His work was read by many students in German universities.

Droysen was also very interested in politics. In 1840, he became a professor at the University of Kiel. He wanted to protect the rights of the Elbe duchies. He helped write a protest against King Christian VIII of Denmark in 1844. In 1848, he was elected to the Frankfurt parliament. He believed Prussia should lead the way to unite all German lands. He thought Prussia was the best choice for this big job.

In his later years, Droysen focused on Prussian history. He moved to the University of Jena in 1851. Later, he moved to Berlin, where he stayed until he died in 1884. He wrote a huge series called The History of Prussian Politics. This work had 32 volumes in total. He also wrote a very good biography of Count Yorck von Wartenburg. His sons, Gustav and Hans, also became writers of history. They followed in their father's footsteps by writing about the past.
