He lived during the time of the German Empire. He was known for having very strong and intense political ideas. Treitschke was a member of the Reichstag, which was the German parliament. He was also a member of the National Liberal Party. His writings had a huge impact on how people thought about Germany. He was one of the most well-known people living in Berlin during his time.

Treitschke's life was shaped by his studies and his health. He was born in Dresden in 1834 to a military family. As he grew up, he developed a serious hearing problem. This made it hard for him to work in many public jobs. He studied at the universities of Leipzig and Bonn. Later, he worked as a professor at several different schools. These included the University of Freiburg, the University of Kiel, and the University of Heidelberg. He eventually became a professor in Berlin at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-University.

His political views changed a lot as he grew older. At first, he was a strong Liberal who wanted a united Germany. He hoped for a single state with a parliamentary government. However, he later became a supporter of the powerful House of Hohenzollern. He supported Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and his many political plans. Treitschke also believed in a strong, militarist state. He did not believe in individual rights or the separation of powers. He often attacked any groups that he thought weakened German power.

Treitschke held many views that were very unfair and harmful. He was an extreme nationalist who believed Germany should expand through colonialism. He was a harsh critic of the British Empire. He also spoke out against many different groups of people. He was against Catholics, Poles, and socialists living in Germany. Most notably, he was a leader in spreading anti-Semitism. He used the phrase "The Jews are our misfortune!" to attack Jewish people. He even claimed that people of African heritage were inferior.

He was a very busy writer who produced many large works. His most famous project was the History of Germany in the Nineteenth Century. He began publishing the first volume of this work in 1879. He spent 26 years writing more volumes for this series. He also wrote collections of essays called Historische und politische Aufsatze. Treitschke died in Berlin in 1896 at the age of 61.
