He was a businessman, a writer, and a politician. He was born in Berlin to Emil Rathenau and Mathilde Nachmann. His father started a huge company called AEG. This company made electricity and electrical equipment. Rathenau was very smart and studied physics, chemistry, and philosophy. He even earned a doctorate in physics in 1889. He was a leader in the German Empire and the Weimar Republic.

Rathenau was excellent at making businesses run well. He worked in a Swiss factory and a firm in Bitterfeld. Later, he joined the AEG board in 1899. He was very good at fixing companies. He set up power stations in many places. These included Manchester, Buenos Aires, and Baku. He was even involved with 84 different companies around the world. He used his profits to buy more assets for his work. His skills helped him become a top industrialist.

Rathenau also helped his country during hard times. In 1914, he helped lead the War Raw Materials Department. This group found supplies that Germany needed during World War I. After the war, he joined the German Democratic Party. He wanted workers to have a say in how companies were run. In 1921, he became the minister of reconstruction. By 1922, he was the foreign minister. He worked hard to make peace with other nations. He even signed the Treaty of Rapallo with Soviet Russia in April 1922.

Even though he worked hard, some people were very unkind to him. Many people in Germany were antisemitic, which means they were unfair to Jewish people. Rathenau was Jewish, and he felt like a second-class citizen. Some groups, like the early Nazi Party, blamed him for many problems. They wrongly accused him of being part of a conspiracy. On June 24, 1922, members of a secret group called Organisation Consul killed him. They attacked his car in Berlin with a gun and a grenade. This was a very violent and sad event for Germany.

His death caused many people to feel great sadness.

However, things changed when the Nazis took power in 1933. They banned all ways to remember him. Even so, his life shows how one person can impact many different areas. He remains a famous figure in German history.
