Gregor Strasser was an important German politician. He was a leader in the Nazi Party during its early years. He was born on May 31, 1892, in Geisenfeld, Bavaria. His father was a Catholic judicial officer. Strasser grew up with his younger brother, Otto. Some people thought Otto was the more intellectual brother. Before he entered politics, Strasser worked as a pharmacist. He studied at a university but had to stop during the war.

World War I changed his life. He joined the German Imperial Army as a volunteer in 1914. He served in a special artillery regiment. He rose to the rank of first lieutenant. For his bravery, he won the Iron Cross of both classes. After the war ended, he went back to school. He finished his studies and became a pharmacist in Landshut in 1920. He also joined a group called the Freikorps. This group was led by Franz Ritter von Epp.

Strasser was a very talented organizer. He joined the Nazi Party in 1920. He helped the party grow from a small group into a huge force. He traveled all over northern and western Germany. He used his railroad passes to visit many different places. He set up new party branches and met many people. In 1925, there were only 71 local party chapters. By the end of that year, Strasser helped grow that number to 272 chapters.

Even though he was successful, Strasser had different ideas than Adolf Hitler. Strasser wanted more social changes for workers. His ideas were often called "socialist" by others. He and Otto even started a newspaper for workers. In 1926, they had a big meeting in Bamberg. At this meeting, Hitler spoke against Strasser's ideas. Hitler wanted total control over the party. This caused a split between the two leaders. Strasser later became the head of the party's organization. He helped the party win many votes in the Reichstag.

Things became very difficult for Strasser in 1932. A man named Kurt von Schleicher offered him a high job in the government. This made Hitler very angry. Hitler forced Strasser to leave all his party jobs. Strasser then quit his seat in the Reichstag. He went back to his old job as a pharmacist. On June 30, 1934, something very bad happened. During an event called the Night of the Long Knives, the Gestapo arrested him. He was executed shortly after his arrest. His way of thinking is still called Strasserism today.
