The Nazi Party was a powerful political group in Germany. It was officially called the National Socialist German Workers' Party. The party was active from 1920 until 1945. It created a set of ideas known as Nazism. These ideas focused on extreme nationalism and racism. The party wanted to change how Germany worked. It aimed to create a strong and unified nation.

The party grew by using specific ideas to win support. At first, they used words about workers to attract the lower middle class. Later, they changed their focus to get help from business leaders. Their main ideas became about being against Marxists and against Jewish people. They wanted to build a "people's community." This community only included people they thought were "racially desirable." They wanted to protect what they called the "Aryan master race."

The party began as a much smaller group. In 1919, a man named Anton Drexler started the German Workers' Party. This group was the precursor to the Nazi Party. In 1919, a soldier named Adolf Hitler attended a meeting in Munich. He was an intelligence agent for the army at that time. He joined the party as member number 555. Hitler became the leader of the party in 1921.

Many things helped the party gain more power in the 1930s. The Great Depression made life very hard for many Germans. Many people lost their jobs and had poor living standards. This led people to support extreme political groups. On January 30, 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor. Hitler soon took total power and became a dictator. He ruled a regime called the Third Reich.

The Nazi era was a time of great harm and injustice. The party targeted many groups of people. They persecuted Jews, Romani people, and Slavs. They also targeted people with disabilities and political opponents. This led to the Holocaust, which was a system of mass murder. About 6 million Jews and millions of others were killed. After World War II ended, the party was made illegal. Germany began a process called denazification to remove Nazi influence.
