*Mein Kampf* is a famous and controversial book. It is a political manifesto and an autobiography. This means it tells the story of a person's life and their political ideas. The book is divided into two main parts. Volume 1 is called "A Reckoning." It covers his early life and his time in Vienna. Volume 2 is called "The National Socialist Movement." It explains his views on the state and his political organization. Hitler used the book to share his plans for Germany. He wanted to create a "New Order" in the world. He also wrote about his goals for expanding German land.

Hitler began writing this book while he was in prison. He was held at Landsberg Prison in 1924. He was there after a failed attempt to take power in Munich. He received a sentence of five years in fortress confinement. While in jail, he spent a lot of time working on the book. He realized it would need to be two volumes. He hoped the book would help him pay his debts from his trial.

Many people helped with the book during its creation. Emil Maurice helped with early transcription of the text. Later, Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess, did most of the editing. The book was first published in 1925 and 1926. At first, it did not sell very well. However, it became a bestseller after Hitler rose to power in 1933. By 1939, the book had sold 5.2 million copies in eleven different languages.

Today, scholars study the book to understand the past. The book contains very hateful ideas about many groups. Hitler wrote about the "Jewish peril" and claimed there was a conspiracy. He also spoke about needing "living space" in the East. He had many negative views about Slavic people. Because of these ideas, the book is studied with great care. Experts use notes to explain the harmful messages within the text.
