He was born on January 1, 1909, in Galicia. At that time, his home was part of Austria-Hungary. His father, Andriy, was a priest in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Stepan grew up in a large, religious family with seven siblings. As a young boy, he enjoyed many hobbies like singing and playing the guitar. He also liked hiking, swimming, and playing chess. He did not go to primary school because of World War I. Instead, his parents taught him at home.

Bandera spent his youth working for Ukrainian independence. He joined several youth groups like Plast and the Ukrainian Military Organisation. By 1929, he joined the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, known as the OUN. He worked hard to spread nationalist ideas through propaganda. This work often led to trouble with the Polish government. He was arrested several times between 1928 and 1933. In 1934, he was linked to a plot against a Polish minister named Bronisław Pieracki. He was convicted of terrorism and given a life prison sentence.

World War II changed everything for Bandera and his movement. He was freed from prison in 1939 when Poland was invaded. Later, the OUN split into two different groups. Bandera led the more radical group called the OUN-B.

This group wanted a single-party state for Ukraine. In June 1941, his group announced the creation of a Ukrainian state in Lviv. The group pledged to work with Nazi Germany. However, the German government did not like this move. They arrested Bandera and sent him to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1942.

Life for Bandera continued through the end of the war. The Germans released him in 1944 to help fight the Soviet Union. He later moved to West Germany with his family. In 1959, he was assassinated by a KGB agent in Munich.

Because of his past, people have very different views of him. Some Ukrainians see him as a hero who fought for freedom. Others condemn him as a Nazi collaborator. They point to the massacres of Polish and Jewish people by his followers. This remains a very difficult topic in Ukraine today.

Even today, Bandera's name is found in many places. You can see his image on Ukrainian postage stamps.
