Ante Pavelić was a Croatian politician and lawyer. He was born on July 14, 1889, in the village of Bradina. His family moved to the area to work on a railway line. As a young man, he studied law at the University of Zagreb. He earned his doctorate in July 1915. During his early career, he was a member of the Croatian Party of Rights. This group wanted Croatia to be an independent country.

Pavelić became more radical as his political life grew. In 1927, he secretly contacted the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. He wanted Italian support to help break away from Yugoslavia. He even offered to give up some Croatian lands to Italy to get this help. In 1929, he founded a group called the Ustaše. This movement wanted to create an independent Croatia by any means. They used terror, such as bombings and assassinations, to reach their goals.

In 1941, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy occupied parts of Yugoslavia. They helped set up a new state called the Independent State of Croatia, or the NDH. On April 10, 1941, Slavko Kvaternik declared the state was formed. Pavelić returned from Italy to lead this new government. He took the title Poglavnik, which means supreme leader. He ruled the NDH as a dictator with a system like Nazi Germany.

During his rule, Pavelić led a very violent and unfair government. He created policies that targeted Serbs, Jews, and Roma people. Many of these people were killed in concentration and extermination camps. Hundreds of thousands of Serbs died during this time. Tens of thousands of Jews and Roma were also killed. Many Orthodox Christians were forced to change their religion or were expelled. These events are known as one of the most disastrous episodes in Yugoslav history.

When the war ended in 1945, Pavelić fled to Austria. He later escaped to Argentina using a false passport from the Vatican. In Argentina, he worked as a security advisor to President Juan Perón. In 1957, someone tried to shoot him in Buenos Aires. He fled to Spain to avoid being sent back to Yugoslavia. He lived in Madrid for two and a half years. He died there on December 28, 1959, at the age of 70.
