They were officially called the Chetnik Detachments of the Yugoslav Army. Many people also knew them as the Ravna Gora Movement. They were Serbian nationalists and royalists. This means they wanted to protect Serbian interests and the king. Their main goal was to create a large, unified Serbian state.

They used guerrilla warfare to fight. This is a way of fighting using small, fast groups.

The movement worked in many different ways during the war. At first, they fought against the Axis powers. These were the countries that occupied Yugoslavia. However, they also chose to work with the occupiers. They called this policy "using the enemy."

This was a tactical choice to help their own goals. They made deals with the German-occupied government in Serbia. They also worked with the Italians in Dalmatia and Montenegro. Later, they even cooperated with German forces directly.

History shows that the Chetniks had roots long before World War II. The word "Chetnik" might come from the Turkish word "çete." This word means to plunder or burn. Other people think it comes from a Slavic word for a company or group.

Small groups of fighters had been active in the Balkans for a long time. They fought in the Balkan Wars from 1912 to 1913. They also fought in World War I. By 1921, many veterans formed groups to keep their history alive. These groups were very patriotic and influential in the new state of Yugoslavia.

Leadership and specific events shaped how the movement acted. Draža Mihailović was the leader of the Chetniks.

In 1941, the Chetniks led an uprising against German troops. This was very dangerous for civilians. The Germans killed 100 hostages for every soldier killed. They also killed 50 hostages for every soldier wounded. In October 1941, over 4,500 civilians died in massacres in Kraljevo and Kragujevac. These events convinced Mihailović to change his strategy. He decided to stop large attacks to prevent more Serbian deaths.

The actions of the Chetniks caused great suffering for many people. They used terror tactics against different groups in Yugoslavia. They targeted Croats, Muslims, and Communist-led Partisans.
