The Yugoslav Partisans were a large resistance group during World War II.

They fought against the Axis powers that occupied Yugoslavia. These occupying forces included Nazi Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Bulgaria. The Partisans had two main goals for their struggle. First, they wanted to free Yugoslav lands from these foreign powers. Second, they wanted to create a new state ruled by communists. This group was very important because they were a highly effective resistance movement in Europe.

At the start, the Partisans used a style called guerrilla warfare. This means they used quick, mobile moves to surprise their enemies. They did not fight in large, set battles right away. They relied on being highly mobile to stay safe. As the war went on, they grew into a massive fighting force. They eventually moved from small groups to regular, conventional warfare. They organized themselves into many different units to fight more effectively.

This movement began after the Axis powers invaded Yugoslavia in April 1941.

A leader named Josip Broz Tito organized the resistance. The Communist Party of Yugoslavia led the group. At first, the Partisans worked mostly in secret. They spent time building networks and gathering weapons. In July 1941, they launched a large uprising against the occupiers. This led to the creation of a short-lived area called the Republic of Užice.

The Partisans grew very large as the war continued. By late 1944, the group had about 650,000 members. These members were organized into 52 divisions and four field armies. By April 1945, their numbers rose to over 800,000 people.

They also faced a rival group called the Chetniks. The Chetniks wanted to keep the Yugoslav monarchy. The two groups often fought each other during the war. Eventually, the Allies began to support Tito and the Partisans more.

By the end of the war, the Partisans had won. They helped liberate Belgrade in the autumn of 1944. This happened during the Belgrade Offensive with the Soviet Red Army. They gained control of the whole country and other areas.

After the fighting stopped, they changed into a new group. In March 1945, they became the regular Yugoslav Army. This army helped form the new Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. Their work changed the map of Europe for many years.
