The Home Army was a massive secret group in Poland. It worked to resist German control during World War II.

This group was part of the Polish Underground State. This meant they were a secret government working inside the country. They stayed loyal to the Polish government living in London. The Home Army was not just a small band of fighters. It was one of the largest underground movements in all of Europe.

Members of the Home Army lived in many different ways. Some were full-time members living in cities under false names. They worked undercover to gather secrets or carry messages. Other members were called "forest people" because they lived in the woods. These fighters lived in groups to fight the German forces directly.

Many others were part-time members who lived normal lives. They worked regular jobs but helped the group when needed. These people were ready to fight if a big uprising began.

The group grew through many different steps over several years. It started with a small group in September 1939. General Michał Karaszewicz-Tokarzewski set up the first service for victory. Later, the Armed Resistance group took its place in November 1939. Finally, the Home Army was officially formed in February 1942.

Over time, many smaller groups joined the Home Army. This helped the movement grow much larger and stronger.

Numbers show just how huge this movement became. In 1942, the group had about 100,000 members. By the summer of 1944, it reached its highest size. Some estimates say there were as many as 600,000 members.

The group had over 10,000 officers to lead them. They also had many non-commissioned officers and trained soldiers. Women played a vital role in these large numbers. About one tenth to one seventh of the fighters were women.

The Home Army did many important jobs to help Poland. They sabotaged German trains to destroy supplies for the war. They also fought in many battles and raids.

Their most famous fight was the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. As the war ended, things became very difficult for them. Conflict grew between the Home Army and Soviet forces. The group was disbanded on January 19, 1945. Many former members later faced hard times in prisons.
