The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was a major revolt by Jewish people. It took place in Poland during World War II. At that time, Germany had occupied the country. The uprising happened because the Jewish people wanted to resist the Nazis. They were fighting against the plan to send them to death camps. These camps were called Treblinka and Majdanek. This revolt was the largest single Jewish uprising during the whole war.

To prepare for the fight, the people in the ghetto worked hard. They built many underground shelters called bunkers. They also smuggled weapons and explosives into the area. Two main groups led the resistance. One was called the Jewish Combat Organization, or ŻOB. The other was the Jewish Military Union, or ŻZW. They even used the city sewers to move around. Some fighters used handguns and gasoline bottles to defend themselves.

This struggle began a long time before the main revolt. In 1939, German leaders forced many Jews into crowded areas. The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest of these areas. It held about 300,000 to 400,000 people in a small space. In the summer of 1942, a large group of people was sent away. This event was called the Grossaktion Warsaw. Over 250,000 people were killed at the Treblinka camp during this time.

The main uprising started on April 19, 1943. This was near the holiday of Passover. German forces entered the ghetto to take the remaining people. The Jewish fighters met them with ambushes in the streets. They used petrol bombs to set fire to German vehicles. A leader named Jürgen Stroop took command of the German forces. He ordered the destruction of the ghetto block by block.

The fighting lasted until May 16, 1943. Many buildings were burned during the battle. According to Stroop, at least 56,065 Jews were killed or captured. The fighters knew they could not win the war. One leader, Marek Edelman, said they fought for honor. They wanted to choose how they faced their deaths. This event remains a very important part of Jewish history.
