She lived through a very difficult time in history. During World War II, German forces occupied the city of Warsaw. They forced Jewish people into a crowded area called a ghetto.

Irena decided to risk her life to help others. She worked with many people to save those being treated unfairly. Her work showed great courage during a dark time.

Irena used her job to help people in secret. She worked for the Department of Social Welfare and Public Health. This job gave her a special permit to enter the ghetto. She told officials she was checking for the disease typhus.

While there, she brought food, medicine, and clothes to the people. She and her friends also helped smuggle children out of the ghetto. They gave the children false papers and new names to keep them safe.

Helping people was a very dangerous job for Irena. The German occupiers made a rule that helping Jews could lead to death. This rule applied to the helpers and their whole families. In October 1943, the Gestapo arrested Irena. They wanted to find out her secrets and where the children were.

Even though she was hurt, she never told them anything. She kept the names of the children safe on a secret list.

Irena was even sentenced to death by the occupiers. However, she narrowly escaped her execution. A group called Żegota helped by bribing officials to get her released.

Today, we remember Irena for her kindness to others. She helped save about 2,500 children from the Holocaust.
