Amery's political ideas changed how he lived. He became very strongly against Communism. He believed the ideas of Nazi Germany were the only way to stop it. In 1936, he left Britain to live in France. While there, he met a French leader named Jacques Doriot. They traveled to places like Austria, Italy, and Germany together. Amery also worked during the Spanish Civil War. He told his family he was an officer for Italian volunteers. In truth, he worked with groups that moved weapons.

During World War II, Amery helped the German side. He lived in France after the German invasion in 1940. He eventually traveled to Berlin in October 1942. There, he spoke with the German English Committee. Adolf Hitler was impressed by him and let him stay as a guest. Amery made radio broadcasts to help Germany. He tried to convince British people to join the fight against Communism. He also wanted to start a new military unit.

This unit was called the British Free Corps. Amery wanted to find 50 to 100 men for it. He went to a prisoner of war camp near Paris to find them. He spoke to men from many different countries. His first attempt to find recruits did not work well. Only one man named Kenneth Berry joined the group. The German military eventually took over the unit. Amery's direct role with the group ended in October 1943. Later, he went to Italy to help the leader Benito Mussolini.

Amery's journey ended with a trial in London. Italian fighters caught him in April 1945. They sent him back to the United Kingdom. He was charged with high treason. Treason is the crime of being disloyal to your own country. At his trial in November 1945, he surprised everyone. He pleaded guilty to eight counts of treason. The trial lasted only eight minutes. A judge sentenced him to death. He was hanged at Wandsworth Prison on December 19, 1945.
