Stepan Andriyovych Bandera was a prominent leader of Ukrainian nationalism during the mid-20th century.

He led the radical faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, known as the OUN-B. His political activities were defined by a drive for Ukrainian independence from foreign control. This movement sought to establish a sovereign state through revolutionary and often violent means. Because of his actions, Bandera remains one of the most debated figures in modern history. His legacy continues to influence political discussions in Ukraine and across Europe today.

Bandera’s path to leadership began with his involvement in various nationalist youth and military groups.

He joined the Ukrainian Military Organization in 1924 and later the OUN in 1929. He rose quickly through the organization by managing propaganda and controlling regional units. In 1934, he was linked to the assassination of the Polish interior minister, Bronisław Pieracki. Following a trial for terrorism, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. This period solidified his reputation as a revolutionary symbol among many Ukrainians living under Polish rule.

Political shifts during World War II caused the OUN to split into two distinct groups. The first was the OUN-M, led by Andriy Melnyk, which favored a more conservative approach. The second was the OUN-B, led by Bandera, which embraced a radical, revolutionary strategy.

The OUN-B aimed to create a single-party, fascist totalitarian state. This faction attracted many young members who sought immediate independence. The two groups competed for legitimacy and influence over the future of the Ukrainian people.

In 1941, Bandera’s faction took a significant step toward statehood during the German invasion of the Soviet Union. On June 30, 1941, the Ukrainian National Committee announced the creation of a Ukrainian state in Lviv. This proclamation included a pledge to cooperate with Nazi Germany. However, the German government did not support this independent move. As a result, the Gestapo arrested Bandera in January 1942. He was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he remained until his release in 1944.

After his release, Bandera continued to engage in complex political negotiations. The Germans released him in hopes that he would help fight the advancing Soviet Union. In March 1945, he negotiated the creation of the Ukrainian National Army. Following the end of the war, Bandera and his family moved to West Germany. His life ended in 1959 when a KGB agent assassinated him in Munich.

Conversely, many others, particularly in the south and east, condemn him as a Nazi collaborator. Critics point to the massacres of Polish and Jewish civilians committed by his followers during the war. In 2010, President Viktor Yushchenko awarded him the title of Hero of Ukraine. This decision was widely criticized and the award was annulled in 2011.

Bandera's influence is still visible through modern commemorations and symbols.
