He was born in 1877 in a place called Tingleff. His parents originally wanted to name him Horace Greeley Schacht. They chose this name to honor an American journalist. However, his grandmother insisted on a Danish name instead. Schacht grew up to study many subjects at different universities. He studied medicine, law, and finance. He eventually earned a doctorate in 1899. He spent much of his early career working at the Dresdner Bank.

Schacht became a leader in the German money system during a hard time. In 1923, Germany faced a problem called hyperinflation. This meant prices were rising much too fast. Schacht served as the currency commissioner to help fix this. He helped introduce a new currency called the Rentenmark. This new money was based on a mortgage on German property. His work helped make the German Reichsmark stable again. Because of this success, he became the President of the Reichsbank in 1923. He also helped create the Young Plan in 1929. This plan changed how Germany paid its war debts.

Later, Schacht began to work with the Nazi Party. He was not a member of the party himself. However, he helped raise money for them. He believed a strong government could help Germany become a world power again. Schacht helped organize a petition for leaders to appoint Adolf Hitler as Chancellor. After Hitler took power in 1933, Schacht kept his job at the Reichsbank. He also became the Minister of Economics in 1934. He supported big projects like the construction of autobahnen. These were large highways built to give people jobs. These road projects even influenced the New Deal in the United States.

Even though he worked for the government, Schacht did not always agree with Hitler. He had many disagreements with leaders like Hermann Göring. Schacht worried that spending too much on weapons would hurt the economy. He also thought some policies broke international rules. Because of these clashes, he resigned as President of the Reichsbank in 1939. He stayed in the government as a minister without a specific job. He left the government entirely in January 1943. He had no role in the government during World War II. His time as a leader of the economy was coming to an end.

Life became very difficult for Schacht after the war began. In 1944, the government arrested him. This happened after an attempt to kill Hitler. The government thought Schacht had contact with the people involved. He was sent to several concentration camps, including Dachau.

In the final days of the war, he was moved to South Tyrol. He was finally freed in April 1945. Later, he stood trial at Nuremberg for his actions. The court found him not guilty. A different court later tried to give him a punishment, but it was overturned. He lived until 1970.
