He led the Communist Party of Germany from 1925 to 1933. Thälmann wanted to change Germany into a socialist state. He believed in a way of thinking called Marxism-Leninism. This meant he wanted a different way to run the country. His ideas were very strong and shaped many political battles. He was a central figure during a time of great change in Germany.

Thälmann's life began with hard work in his home city. He was born in Hamburg in 1886.

His parents ran a shop near the port. Because his parents could not pay for his school, he worked a lot. He even worked as a fireman on a steam ship named the Amerika. Later, he joined a trade union for workers. He also served in the military during World War I. He fought in many big battles like the Battle of the Somme.

His political journey grew very fast after the war ended.

He joined the Communist Party and met leaders like Vladimir Lenin in Moscow. By 1925, he became the chairman of his party. He even ran for the presidency of Germany. During his campaigns, he used slogans to warn people about the dangers of war. He was a very famous face on many posters.

People across the country knew his name and his ideas.

One big problem during his time was a split between political groups. The Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party often fought each other. Thälmann's party called the other group "social fascists." This disagreement made it very hard for them to work together. Because they were fighting, they could not form a united front. This made it easier for the Nazi Party to take power.

This split changed the course of German history forever.

After the Nazi regime took control in 1933, Thälmann's life changed quickly.

The police arrested him in Berlin. He was kept in solitary confinement for eleven long years. He spent most of this time alone in prison. In 1944, he was killed at the Buchenwald camp. His life shows how much politics can change a person's fate. Today, people still study his role in the history of Germany.
