He wanted to use his education to help the working people. His life was filled with many important choices and struggles.

Karl used his legal skills to stand up for others. In 1904, he became known as a political lawyer. He defended people who were being treated unfairly by the law. He often spoke out against how the military treated its recruits.

He also wrote a pamphlet about the dangers of militarism. This writing was about how war can change a country. Because of this pamphlet, he was sent to prison for a year in 1907. Many workers in Berlin supported him during this hard time.

His political career grew as he entered the government. In 1912, he was elected to the Reichstag. This was the parliament where leaders made laws for Germany.

He was one of the youngest members of this group. Karl worked hard to find problems within the government. For example, he showed that a large steel company had used bribes. He also fought against spending too much money on the army. He wanted the money to be used differently.

World War I changed everything for Karl and his party. When the war started in 1914, he strongly disagreed with the fighting.

He and other leaders wanted to stop the war effort. This caused a big split in the SPD. Karl helped start the Spartacus League to fight for his views. Later, he helped found the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) with Rosa Luxemburg. In 1918, he stood at the Berlin Palace to proclaim a new republic. He wanted a socialist system for the people.

In early 1919, things became very difficult and violent.

Karl helped lead an uprising that did not succeed. During this time, he and Rosa Luxemburg were captured. They were killed by groups known as the Freikorps.
