These books helped people understand how the past shaped the world.

Jaurès began his career as a teacher. He was born in Castres in 1859. He was a brilliant student in Paris. He earned a degree in philosophy in 1881. After that, he taught at a school in Albi. He also worked at the University of Toulouse. In 1885, he became a leader in the government. He represented the area of Tarn in the National Assembly. He held this job for many years until he died.

As time went on, Jaurès became a major socialist leader. He helped different groups join together. In 1902, he led the French Socialist Party. Later, in 1905, he helped form a new group called the SFIO. He also started a newspaper in 1904. Jaurès used his speeches to help people. He spoke up for miners who were on strike. He also helped defend a man named Alfred Dreyfus during a famous legal case.

Jaurès wanted peace in Europe. He did not want countries to fight big wars. He was an antimilitarist, which means he was against using the military. He tried to help France and Germany stay friendly. He wanted leaders to talk instead of fight. In July 1914, he went to a meeting in Brussels. He worked with German leaders to try to stop a war. He believed that peace was the best way to help people.

Sadly, Jaurès did not get to see peace. On July 31, 1914, a man named Raoul Villain killed him.

His death happened right as World War I was starting. This made it even harder to stop the fighting. Many people in France still remember him today. There is a large monument for him in Castres.
