He was born in Constantinople on November 24, 1873. His family was middle-class and Jewish. They moved to Odessa in 1878. Later, they moved to Saint Petersburg in 1881. During his childhood, Martov saw many unfair things happen to Jewish people. He also had a limp from a broken leg. These hard times made him want to create a fairer world. In his teen years, Martov became very interested in politics. He read many famous books about how the world works. He began to follow a way of thinking called Marxism. This idea focuses on the lives of working people. In 1892, he was arrested for sharing revolutionary papers. He spent time in prison and studied many important books. Later, he was sent to live in Siberia. This was a very cold and lonely place near the Arctic Circle.

Martov was a very good writer for the paper. However, he and Lenin began to disagree. They had different ideas about how a political party should work. Martov wanted a large and inclusive party. Lenin wanted a small and very strict group.

This disagreement caused a big split in 1903. The group divided into two different parts. Lenin led the group called the Bolsheviks. Martov led the smaller group called the Mensheviks.

Martov believed that many different people should be allowed to join. He did not want the party to be a secret club. During the Russian Revolution in 1905, he shared many ideas about how to change the country. He also spoke out against the big war that started in 1914. He wanted people to work together for peace.

Martov spent his later years fighting for democratic rights. After the revolution in 1917, he returned to Russia. He did not agree with how the new government acted. He spoke out against unfair treatment and the loss of rights. In 1920, he had to leave Russia and live in exile. He moved to Berlin and started a new newspaper. Martov struggled with a sickness called tuberculosis for a long time. He died in Germany in 1923. People remembered him as a very smart and honest leader.
