Later, he moved to Europe to study medicine at the University of Leiden. After that, he moved to New York to study law at Columbia College. He worked as a teacher of math and ancient languages for a while. He also worked as a lawyer in Brownsville, Texas. Eventually, he settled in New York City to focus on his political work.

His journey into politics was filled with many big ideas. In 1890, he joined the Socialist Labor Party. He became the editor of their newspaper, which was called *The People*. He spent many years writing for this paper to share his views. He also ran for high offices, like the governor of New York. In 1902, he won more than 15,000 votes in his best election. He wanted to use politics to help create a new kind of society.

De Leon was a man of many talents and languages. He could speak Spanish, English, French, Dutch, and German. He also knew how to read ancient Greek and Latin. He was a co-founder of the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905. This group was meant to bring workers together. However, he later had many disagreements with the leaders of that group. These arguments led to his followers forming their own separate union.

His influence reached far beyond the borders of the United States. His ideas helped start socialist parties in places like Australia and Canada. They also reached the United Kingdom. Even famous thinkers in other countries studied his work. De Leon died in 1914 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.
