Industrial unionism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Industrial unionism is a way to organize workers in a single industry. In this system, every worker joins the same union. It does not matter if they have special skills or not. This method gives workers much more power when they negotiate. They can use strikes more effectively if everyone works together. This is different from craft unionism. Craft unions only organize people who do specific jobs.

This way of organizing works by grouping people by their workplace. For example, all workers in a railway industry would be in one group. This creates a strong sense of solidarity. Solidarity means workers support each other to reach a goal. In craft unions, different trades often worked separately. This sometimes caused problems during strikes. In 1888, some railway workers went on strike. However, other workers in different unions did not join them. This allowed the employers to keep things running with new workers.

History shows how these ideas grew in the United States. In 1893, Eugene Debs helped form the American Railway Union. He wanted to fix the problems of craft unions. During the Pullman Strike in 1894, this union helped stop train traffic. The strike spread from Chicago to the South and East. The General Managers Association felt they could not handle Debs. They asked the United States government for help. The government sent the Army and Marshals to end the strike.

In 1905, a new group called the Industrial Workers of the World formed in Chicago. People often called these members "Wobblies." They wanted to create "One Big Union" for all workers. They did not care about a person's race, sex, or origin.

These workers faced very hard times. The government in the United States and Australia passed laws against them. In 1917, the New York Times ran many articles attacking them. Some members were even arrested or faced violence in places like Tulsa.

These ideas are not just found in North America. The concept of industrial unionism exists all over the world. In Australia, the IWW offered a different way to organize. In South Africa, a group called COSATU uses these ideas. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions also works this way. Even in the United Kingdom, workers have looked for control over their industries. These groups show how workers still use these methods today. They continue to strive for fairness in the workplace.
