Industrial unionism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Industrial unionism is a way to organize workers. In this system, all workers in one industry join the same union. It does not matter if they have special skills or not. This gives workers more power when they talk to bosses.

In the past, many groups used craft unionism. These groups only organized people with specific jobs. In 1893, Eugene Debs helped start the American Railway Union. He wanted an industrial union for railway workers. During the Pullman Strike in 1894, this union helped stop train traffic. This showed how strong workers could be when they acted together.

In 1905, a new group called the Industrial Workers of the World was formed. People called them "Wobblies." They wanted "One Big Union" for everyone. They did not care about a person's race or gender.

These groups faced many hard times. Governments in the United States and Australia passed laws against them. Some workers were even arrested. Today, this way of organizing is still used. Groups in South Africa and Korea use these ideas to help workers.
