Rosa's life began in a town called Zamość. This town was in Poland, which was ruled by Russia at the time. She was born on March 5, 1871. Her family was Jewish and lived a modern life. When she was five, she had a hip disease. She had to stay in a cast for one year. During that time, she taught herself to read and write. This illness left her with a permanent limp.

As a young woman, Rosa moved to Switzerland to study. She went to the University of Zurich in 1890. This was a special place because women could study there just like men. She studied law and political economy. In 1897, she earned a doctorate in economics. She was the first Polish woman to receive this degree. During this time, she also met a man named Leo Jogiches. They worked together on many political ideas for many years.

Rosa moved to Berlin in 1898 to join the SPD. This was a very large political party in Germany. She became a leader for the group that wanted big changes. In 1900, she wrote a famous paper about reform and revolution. She also wrote a big book in 1913 about how capitalism works. When World War I started, Rosa spoke out against the fighting. She did not want the war to happen. Because of her views, the government sent her to prison.

While in prison, Rosa wrote many important things. She wrote the Junius Pamphlet to tell people about the war. In 1918, she was released from prison during a revolution. She helped start a new group called the KPD. In January 1919, she was part of a protest in Berlin. Sadly, the protest ended in a very violent way. Rosa and her friend Karl Liebknecht were killed during this time.
