He lived through many big changes in history. He was born in 1893 in Leipzig, Saxony. His father was a tailor who did not have much money. Walter only went to school for eight years. After that, he trained to be a joiner. He joined the Social Democratic Party in 1912. Later, he joined the Communist Party of Germany in 1920. He became a top leader in that party very quickly.

Ulbricht's early life involved many difficult choices. He served in the army during World War I. However, he did not like the war. He left the army in 1918 and went to prison for two months. This was because he was against the war. He later joined the German Revolution of 1918. In 1923, he joined the Central Committee of his party. He even attended a special school in Moscow in 1924.

Life became very dangerous for Ulbricht in the 1930s. The Nazi Party took power in Germany in 1933. They began to remove Communist leaders from their jobs. Ulbricht had to live in other places like Paris and Prague. He also lived in the Soviet Union from 1937 to 1945. During this time, he worked with the Soviet leaders. He even helped with groups that spoke to German soldiers during the war.

He was the main person making decisions there. He was the leader of the Socialist Unity Party from 1950 to 1971. Life in East Germany was a dictatorship. This meant the government held all the power. People did not have many political rights. Because life was hard, many people tried to leave for West Germany.
