This meant he was the official head of the country.

His life started in a small town called Neunkirchen.

His father was a coal miner and a political activist. As a young man, Honecker joined the Communist Party. This was a very dangerous choice at that time. The Nazi government arrested him and put him in prison. He spent many years behind bars for his beliefs. He even escaped from a prison during a bombing raid in 1945.

After the war, he began his political career again.

In the years after the war, Honecker rose through the ranks. He helped start a group for young people called the FDJ.

Later, he became a very powerful official in the government. In 1961, he was the main organizer of the Berlin Wall. He was also responsible for the orders used at the border. In 1971, he took over the top leadership of East Germany. He did this with support from the Soviet Union.

As a leader, Honecker tried to change how people lived. He started a plan called "consumer socialism." This plan aimed to give people more goods to buy. He wanted people to be loyal to the government in exchange. He also helped East Germany become a member of the UN. This was one of his biggest political wins.

However, he refused to make big changes when times shifted. He did not want to follow the new reforms in the Soviet Union. This made things very difficult for his country.

By 1989, many people in East Germany were unhappy. They began to protest for more freedom and change.

Because of these protests, the party forced him to resign in October. Shortly after, the Berlin Wall fell and his government collapsed. After Germany became one country again, he faced legal trials. He was very sick with liver cancer during these trials. He eventually moved to Chile to live with his family. He died there in May 1994.
