He served as the first president of the new German republic. He held this position from 1919 until he died in 1925. Ebert belonged to the Social Democratic Party, also known as the SPD. His life was full of hard work and big changes for his country. He helped guide Germany through a time of war and revolution.

Ebert's journey began with learning a trade. He was born in Heidelberg in 1871. His family did not have much money for school. Because of this, he could not go to university. Instead, he trained as a saddle-maker from 1885 to 1888.

After his training, he traveled around Germany to learn more. He joined the SPD in 1889 to help workers. He wanted to find practical ways to make life better for them.

As he grew older, Ebert became a major political figure. He moved to Berlin in 1905 to work as a Secretary-General. In 1912, he was elected to the Reichstag, which is the German parliament.

After the leader August Bebel died in 1913, Ebert became a party chairman. During World War I, he made some very difficult choices. He supported war loans to help Germany during the conflict. This caused his party to split into different groups.

War was a very sad time for Ebert's family. He lost two of his four sons in the fighting.

His son Heinrich died in Macedonia in 1917. His other son, Georg, died in France that same year. When the war ended, Germany went through a huge revolution in 1918. This changed the country from a monarchy to a republic. Ebert helped lead the new government during this messy time.

Ebert's time as president was a period of great struggle. He wanted to bring order and justice to the new nation. To do this, he worked with the military and conservative groups.

He used these groups to stop various uprisings from different political sides. Because he made these alliances, some people thought he was controversial. He worked to keep the country stable during many hard years. He remained a central part of German history until his death.
