Renner was very smart as a child. He went to a special school called a gymnasium. Later, he studied law at the University of Vienna. He even helped start a group called the Friends of Nature. He designed their logo in 1895.

Renner spent much of his life in politics. He joined the Social Democratic Workers' Party in 1896. He worked as a librarian for the parliament too. He often wrote using fake names. He did this so he would not lose his job. Renner wanted to find better ways to run a country. He thought about how different groups of people could live together. He was a leader in a group of thinkers called Austro-Marxists.

However, things were not always easy for him. Other countries told him Austria could not join with Germany. He had to accept many hard changes for his new nation.

Later, a dark time came to Austria. Nazi Germany took control of the country in 1938. During this time, many Jewish people were killed. Official figures say 51,500 Austrian Jews died in camps. Renner stayed away from politics during World War II. After the war ended in 1945, he helped again. Soviet troops arrived in Austria to help end the war. They asked Renner to form a new government.

This became the Second Austrian Republic.

Renner became the first President of this new republic. He was elected in November 1945. Not everyone thought he was a good leader. Some people said he was not kind to Jewish people. They said he did not want survivors to return to Vienna. This is a very serious and sad part of his history. Renner lived in Vienna until he died in 1950. He is buried in a special tomb in the city.
