He lived during a time when the German government was often unstable. He served as the chancellor from August to November in 1923. Later, he was the foreign minister from 1923 until 1929. People called him the person who kept the political system in balance. He worked hard to help his country find peace with its neighbors. This was a very big job during a difficult time.

Stresemann's life began with a love for learning and books. He was born in Berlin on May 10, 1878. His father worked as a beer bottler and ran a small bar. Gustav was a great student who loved history and poetry. He studied at the University of Berlin and Leipzig University. At university, he studied history, law, and political economy. He even wrote a thesis about the beer industry in Berlin.

His political ideas changed a lot as he grew older. Before World War I, he wanted Germany to be a superpower. He even supported building a large navy. However, losing the war was a huge shock to him. This event made him change his mind about war and power. He stopped wanting to take land from others. Instead, he started the German People's Party, also called the DVP.

He began to work with other political groups to build a better future.

Stresemann did many important things to help Germany's economy and peace. In 1923, he helped introduce the Rentenmark to fix the money system. This was needed because prices were rising too fast. He also helped make the Dawes Plan in 1924 to manage war debts. In 1925, he signed the Locarno Treaties to guarantee peace with France.

These treaties helped Germany join the League of Nations in 1926. He even worked on the Kellogg–Briand Pact to promise that nations would not use war to solve problems.

Because of his hard work, Stresemann became a symbol of peace. In 1926, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He shared this prize with the French leader Aristide Briand. This was a very special honor for his work in making friends with France. Sadly, his health was not good toward the end of his life. He died in October 1929 after having several strokes. He was only 51 years old when he passed away.
