He was a theologian, which is a person who studies religious ideas and God. He was also a leader who stood up against the Nazi government. Many people today still read his books about faith. One famous book he wrote is called The Cost of Discipleship. This book was published in 1937 and is now a classic. He believed that faith should guide how people act in the real world.

Bonhoeffer's life was shaped by his deep curiosity and his family. He was born on February 4, 1906, in Breslau, Germany. He grew up in a large family with seven siblings. His father, Karl Bonhoeffer, was a doctor who studied the mind. His mother, Paula, was a teacher. Dietrich was very talented with music from a young age. He learned the piano when he was eight years old. By age eleven, he even wrote songs for the Philharmonic.

As a young man, Bonhoeffer traveled to the United States in 1930. He went to the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. While in America, he visited the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He met a man named Frank Fisher there. He also heard a preacher named Adam Clayton Powell Sr. speak. These experiences changed how he saw the world. He saw how some people were treated unfairly because of their race. This helped him develop a view called pacifism. Pacifism is the belief in peace and loving all people.

When the Nazi party took power in 1933, Bonhoeffer became a strong opponent. He did not agree with how the government treated people. He helped form the Confessing Church to protect traditional Christian beliefs. This group stood against the "Deutsche Christen" movement. That movement tried to mix Nazi ideas with the church. Bonhoeffer even gave a speech on the radio to warn people. He told them not to follow a leader blindly. He wanted people to follow the teachings of Jesus instead.

Because he resisted the government, Bonhoeffer faced many hard times. The government arrested him in April 1943. He spent a year and a half in Tegel Prison. Later, he was moved to the Flossenbürg concentration camp. He was accused of being part of a plan to remove Hitler. This plan happened on July 20. Sadly, Bonhoeffer was hanged on April 9, 1945. This was during the time the Nazi regime was falling apart. Today, people remember him for his courage and his ideas.
