He lived during a time of great change in the church. Many different groups of monks and leaders had tensions between them. Eckhart belonged to the Dominican Order. He was born near Gotha in a place called Thuringia. This area is in the middle of what we now call Germany.

Eckhart's life was full of teaching and leadership. He joined a Dominican convent in Erfurt when he was about eighteen years old. He likely studied in Cologne and maybe even in Paris. In 1294, he gave a famous Easter sermon in Paris. Later, he became a leader for many monks in Germany. He was in charge of forty-seven convents in the Saxony region. He even helped start three new convents for women.

As a teacher, Eckhart was very highly respected. In 1311, he was invited back to teach in Paris. This was a very rare honor for a teacher. Only one other famous thinker, Thomas Aquinas, had received this privilege before. He spent two years teaching in the city of Paris. After his time there, he spent time in Strasbourg. He spent much of his time preaching and helping people with their spiritual lives.

However, some church leaders began to worry about his ideas. They were afraid his sermons might lead people into mistakes. In 1326, an investigation was started to check his teachings. This was part of a larger fear about new spiritual movements. Eckhart tried to defend himself with a written document. He even translated his protest into German so regular people could understand it. He stated clearly that he hated anything wrong.

Eckhart's story ended with a difficult legal trial. He appealed his case to the Pope in Avignon. He likely died in early 1328, before the final verdict arrived. In 1329, Pope John XXII issued a paper called a bull. This paper said some of Eckhart's ideas were not correct. Even so, scholars and many people still find his work very important today. He is studied as a great thinker in the history of philosophy.
